SUPPORTED CLIENTS AND PLUGINS

Beyond the Void can be played from a desktop, phone, tablet, or web browser. The game is heavily map-based, so its client plugins add a dedicated map and integrated game information. Screen-reader support is available separately through the game's optional brief mode.

OPTIONAL SCREEN-READER SUPPORT

Beyond the Void is not exclusively a screen-reader game. It provides an optional server-side mode that removes visual and repetitive output so players using speech or braille can experience the same EverQuest-like world reliably.

After entering the game, type:

  brief on

Brief mode:

and who lists as cleaner spoken text instead of relying on color or tables.

Useful commands in brief mode:

  brief on Enable screen-reader-friendly output.
brief off Restore the visual map and normal prompt.
hp Speak health, mana, endurance, and status.
look Refresh the room and nearby targets.
  target Check your current target.
effects Review active buffs and debuffs.
inventory Review equipment, loose inventory, and bags.
last <channel> Review recent channel messages.

Brief mode is saved on the character. It does not need to be enabled again on every login.

SCREEN READERS ON DESKTOP

Mudlet has the strongest documented screen-reader workflow among the supported desktop clients.

Mudlet setup:

  1. Complete the normal Mudlet installation above.
  2. In Mudlet's command line, enter: mudlet access on
  3. Optionally enter: mudlet access reader
  4. Log into Beyond the Void and enter: brief on

Recommended Mudlet accessibility settings:

Operating-system recommendations:

documents output-window limitations with JAWS, so NVDA or Narrator is the
better starting point for a new setup.

Official Mudlet screen-reader guide:

  https://wiki.mudlet.org/w/Manual:Screen_Readers

MUSHclient remains supported for players who already have an accessible speech plugin or configuration. QMud accessibility is evolving, so Mudlet is the more documented first choice for a new desktop screen-reader setup.

SCREEN READERS ON MOBILE

MudForge is the practical supported mobile option:

MudForge screen-reader setup:

  1. Open Settings. On desktop, Alt+Enter opens settings.
  2. Open Audio and enable Screen Reader Mode.
  3. Install the Beyond the Void plugin if needed.
  4. Connect, log in, and enter: brief on

Use normal VoiceOver or TalkBack gestures to move between command input, game output, and controls. Brief mode removes the game's visual map output and reduces repeated text, but it does not replace the device's screen reader.

ACCESSIBILITY TROUBLESHOOTING

If speech is duplicated:

Disable either the client's direct text announcement or its optional Reader
or TTS package so only one system speaks incoming lines.

If text is skipped during combat:

Enable brief mode, reduce client-side speech verbosity, and use the client's
output-review cursor to review recent lines.

First accessibility test:

  Enter `brief on`, then try `hp`, `look`, `inventory`, and `help tutorial`.
Adjust the client until both entering commands and reviewing output are
  comfortable before beginning combat.
