Cast
Command reference: This page documents the in-game cast command.
CAST
The 'cast' command casts a spell that you have scribed or memorized.
Syntax: cast <spell> cast <spell> at <target> cast <spell> at <target #>
Targeting: <target> can be a creature or player in the room by name, or a target number
from the most recent 'look' list. To use a number, reference the bracketed index shown by 'look' (for example: [2] Goblin Scout → cast Frost Bolt at 2).
If no target is given:
- Self-only spells will target you.
- Beneficial spells will default to your last valid target or yourself.
- Offensive spells will fail without a valid target.
Examples: cast Minor Healing cast Minor Healing at 2 cast Frost Bolt at goblin cast Spirit Armor cast Root at 3 cast 'identify' at silver ring
Notes:
- Spells consume mana and often have casting times. Moving or taking damage
while casting may interrupt the spell.
- Some spells require components or reagents. If missing, the spell will fail.
- Range, line of sight, and resist checks apply. Targets may partially or
completely resist certain spells.
- Recast delays and global recovery times may prevent immediate recasting.
- The spell will fail if the target type is invalid (for example, trying to
heal an enemy or damage a friendly target).
- Spell names are not case sensitive. Use the full name if multiple spells
share a prefix.
- If the target already has a stronger version of an effect, the cast may
fail and no mana will be spent.
- Some magical effects can only be activated through the USEITEM command
instead of CAST. See HELP USEITEM for more information.
- Identify is an exception to normal creature targeting: `cast identify at
<item>` examines an item directly in your inventory. See HELP IDENTIFY.
